A nonlinear high temperature fracture mechanics basis for strainrange partitioning

    Get PDF
A direct link was established between Strainrange Partitioning (SRP) and high temperature fracture mechanics by deriving the general SRP inelastic strain range versus cyclic life relationships from high temperature, nonlinear, fracture mechanics considerations. The derived SRP life relationships are in reasonable agreement based on the experience of the SRP behavior of many high temperature alloys. In addition, fracture mechanics has served as a basis for derivation of the Ductility-Normalized SRP life equations, as well as for examination of SRP relations that are applicable to thermal fatigue life prediction. Areas of additional links between nonlinear fracture mechanics and SRP were identified for future exploration. These include effects of multiaxiality as well as low strain, nominally elastic, long life creep fatigue interaction

Geomagnetic field variations at the equatorial electrojet station in Sri Lanka, Peredinia

The paper discusses the variations of the horizontal (<i>H</i>), vertical (<i>Z</i>) and eastward (<i>Y</i>) components of the geomagnetic field at Peredinia (PRD), an electrojet station in Sri Lanka, with the time of the day, season, sudden commencement (SSC) and during geomagnetic storms. The daily variation of <i>H</i> showed a large peak around midday. The daily variation of <i>Z</i> appeared to be almost a time gradient curve of the daily variation of <i>H</i>, showing a maximum around 09:00 LT (75° EMT) when the <i>H</i> field was increasing fastest and not at noon when Δ <i>H</i> was the maximum. Storm time variation of <i>H</i> resembled the variation of the <i>Dst</i> index but that of <i>Z</i> showed a large minimum about 2-3h before the time of minimum <i>Dst</i> or at the time of maximum time gradient of <i>Dst</i> variation. These features are compared with corresponding variations at the equatorial stations Trivandrum (TRD) in India, and remarkable similarity in all observations is noticed at PRD and TRD. It is suggested that the observed abnormal features of <i>Z</i> variations at electrojet stations in India-Sri Lanka are due to (i) direct effect of the ionospheric electrojet current (ii) the induction effect of the image current by the average spatially extended conductivity region and (iii) the induction current in the local subsurface conductor. It is suggested that the conductor responsible for the observed features in <i>Z</i> in India and Sri Lanka has to have extended spatial domain to latitudes well south of India, rather than confined to narrow Palk Strait

CubeHarmonic: A new interface from a magnetic 3D motion tracking system to music performance

    Get PDF
We developed a new musical interface, CubeHarmonic, with the magnetic 3D motion tracking system IM3D. This sys- tem precisely tracks positions of tiny, wireless, battery-less, and identifiable markers (LC coils) in real time. The Cube- Harmonic is a musical application of the Rubik’s cube, with notes on each little piece. Scrambling the cube, we get dif- ferent chords and chord sequences. Positions of the pieces which contain LC coils are detected through IM3D, and transmitted to the computer to recognize the status of the Rubik’s cube, that plays sounds. The central position of the cube is also measured by the LC coils located into the corners of Rubik’s cube, and, depending on the position, we can manipulate overall loudness and pitch changes, as in theremin playing. This new instrument, whose first idea comes from mathematical theory of music, can be used as a teaching tool both for math (group theory) and music (music theory, mathematical music theory), as well as a composition device, a new instrument for avant-garde per- formances, and a recreational tool

Integrated Land Use-Transport Model System with Dynamic Time-Dependent Activity-Travel Microsimulation

    Get PDF
The development of integrated land use-transport model systems has long been of interest because of the complex interrelationships between land use, transport demand, and network supply. This paper describes the design and prototype implementation of an integrated model system that involves the microsimulation of location choices in the land use domain, activity-travel choices in the travel demand domain, and individual vehicles on networks in the network supply modeling domain. Although many previous applications of integrated transport demand-supply models have relied on a sequential coupling of the models, the system presented in this paper involves a dynamic integration of the activity-travel demand model and the dynamic traffic assignment and simulation model with appropriate feedback to the land use model system. The system has been fully implemented, and initial results of model system runs in a case study test application suggest that the proposed model design provides a robust behavioral framework for simulation of human activity-travel behavior in space, time, and networks. The paper provides a detailed description of the design, together with results from initial test runs

GLIMPSES OF NEPAL : Art Exhibition and Cultural Show at Music Cafe After Eight

Globalization is a modern phenomenon of the human civilization and travelling in order to learn about others’ culture is essential. This thesis introduces cultural tourism in terms of art and creativity. The main aim of this thesis was to successfully organize an event to celebrate the week against racism in Pietarsaari. The preliminary objective of the thesis was to unite multinational people living in Pietarsaari. Another important purpose of this thesis was to analyze if art and culture can upsurge the Nepalese tourism industry. In this report culture and art were focused on as forms of cultural tourism and portrayed as an important social, physical and mental element of our lives. The methodology used in this report is primary and secondary data analysis. Conduction of a questionnaire that was aimed towards potential target groups helped the authors to access the analytical part of the event and find the conclusions. Event planning, the management process and theories of marketing were used for analyzing the data. After the data was obtained by using a quantitative analysis method, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to find reliable results. Nepali culture and art was examined in detail for better understanding during the show. Finally, assessment and conclusions were derived from the event. The study divulged that most of the visitors preferred the show performed in Music Café After Eight and promotion of Nepali culture was possible. It was known that organizing a variety of shows is challenging whereas it is interesting for the ones who want to enjoy different shows in one place

Raman signatures of classical and quantum phases in coupled dots: A theoretical prediction

    Get PDF
We study electron molecules in realistic vertically coupled quantum dots in a strong magnetic field. Computing the energy spectrum, pair correlation functions, and dynamical form factor as a function of inter-dot coupling via diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian, we identify structural transitions between different phases, some of which do not have a classical counterpart. The calculated Raman cross section shows how such phases can be experimentally singled out.Comment: 9 pages, 2 postscript figures, 1 colour postscript figure, Latex 2e, Europhysics Letters style and epsfig macros. Families of Roles: A new theory of occurrent-dependent roles

    Get PDF
PublishedRoles are important both theoretically and practically for modelling the world around us. Although many theories of roles have been proposed, there remain aspects which are little understood. In this paper we investigate roles and their contexts from a temporal point of view.We introduce the idea of a family of occurrent-dependent roles as a means to organise prospective and retrospective derived roles around an original role from which they are derived. By this means we account for the existence of groups of similar roles which are difficult to distinguish without a careful analysis of the temporal aspects. Following detailed informal discussion, we present a preliminary formalisation of the key concepts and relations.Air Force Research Laborator
